A Sachm Co-Chair makes history in Regina

During the Saskatchewan civic election on October 24, 2012, Dr. Jane Ekong became the first person of African ancestry to be elected to the Regina Public School Board. Dr. Ekong, who is a psychologist, was one of three candidates who challenged the incumbent trustee of that subdivision. Despite entering the race late, her campaign progressively gained momentum and she ended up winning with 54% of the votes.

Asked why she decided to run for the Public School Board, Dr. Ekong replied, “I have always been passionate about education because it is an important key to the future. So, I wanted to give back to my community by contributing whatever I can to enhance the educational experiences of the children of Regina and in so doing help shape these future leaders.”
